Quick Summary:=============== This remote is just as much if not more capable than similar remotes like the Logitech Harmony series. Basic programming is easy and requires no PC or internet connection. However, while it has greater advanced programming capabilities compared to many Harmony remotes, it comes at a price. The lack of software and some menu quirks means you kind of have to know what you're doing - or at least be willing to learn through trial and error. Excellent quality, excellent screen, I'd buy this remote over a Harmony. Long Review: ============= URC has been making great remotes for years. If you haven't heard of the brand, just know that they're well established and in my experience of owning 2 other remotes in addition to this one, they have been durable over the course of many years. I also own a Logitech Harmony 880 remote control and can compare the two directly. The URC R40 is similar to Logitech Harmony remotes... Do you have a collection of remote controls, one for each device, each with different series of buttons and menus so that you have to deal with 3 or 4 just to watch a movie? That's what we had here and it was a pain to have to remember how each one worked, especially the ones that aren't used every day, not to mention having to find them all! With all the remotes laid out on the coffee table it looked more like we were trying to launch a space shuttle than simply watch a movie with surround sound! It took me a little while to set this new one up, but it's so nice to have just one remote that does it all. And if a family member wants to use the old remotes, they still work too. (Just think, you can have "dueling remotes". When he tries to switch to the Golf channel, you just zap it right back to HGTV!)I spent about 5 or 6 hours playing around with the set up on this thing. It's not that it was very difficult, just that I've never programmed a remote before, especially... IT COMES WITH BATTERIES! (This is a really important consideration to me--side note, this thing uses 4 AA batteries, so they had better last a while). Okay, three things in the box: the remote, batteries, and a friendly looking brochure in full color with big brioght words on it that say "Quick Start Guide." (not one of those cheap black and white user manuals printed on ultra-thin paper) This whole thing reminds me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ("Don't Panic!"). So we are off to a great start. I will come back after I have fiddled with this thing for a while. Let's see if I can get this set up without too much hassle. Oh, funny note: The batteries are actually labeled "Universal(R) remote control" super alkaline batteries. (universalremote.com) Go figure--Universal; Remote Control Inc. even paid for private label... Read more |
